Large writing box massive mahogany circa 1810.The top has a central rectangular brass vacant cartouche. It looks to be a later replacement - maybe because it had engraved initials from a previous owner. It has a brass star shaped escutcheon and the lock and key look to be original. The top opens to reveal an antique green leather insert with gold tooling, which is a new replacement. At the top end, there is a central pen tray with a nib tray to the right and in each corner is a brass screw topped inkwell. They are both period inkwells but aren't identical, and so one has obviously been a replacement. It has campaign style brass handles that fit flush to the side and can then be pulled out for the purpose of carrying. Each flap can be lifted up to access storage area beneath. There is a long drawer that can be pulled out from the base, after a brass pin has been removed, when the box is open. The drawer is the length of the width of the writing slope (if you see what I mean).
It has been cleaned, re-waxed and polished. A few age related marks and scratches, it is in overall excellent condition.
Measurements: 40.5 cm wide, 24.5 cm deep and 15.3 cm high.
